ECI Telecom Hi-FOCuS ATU-R

intro

B-FOCuS AC230bu (AneT-Less)

This page is about extented (undocumented) capabilities of the ECI Telecom-Group Inovia Telecom Hi-FOCuS™ ATU-R shipped by Deutsche Telekom AG, France Télécom and others to their DSL-customers.

Some words about the model-designation:

Hi-FOCuS™

An ECI-model-designation for a network-access-system, incl. a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). The device placed in the Central Office that accepts all the DSL lines.

ATU-R

stands for ADSL transmission unit – remote. This device is the ADSL modem that sits on the customer side of the telco copper loop. It is a self-contained box suitable for customer use, including an AC adapter for powering.

In this case the ATU-R reaches from U-R2 to T, because the T-SM-interface is internal to the device servicing the ethernet- and ATM25-port: ADSL Forum System Reference Model

So this designation only means the customer-side ADSL-modem for the Hi-FOCuS-Series DSLAM. As time moved forward, there is a more exact designation known now (There is an external list not only listing ECI too):

news

Discussions are held at several locations in the net, these include:

label

The unit has a label like this one:

ECI Telecom Hi-FOCuS ATU-R label DTAG-version (DE) showing ECI Telecom-logo on the left, a barcode in the lower half and the follwing text: CAT. NO: Y57096 2001 0012999683//NTKKAK 40 189 184-091 DT A10AE ECI Telecom Hi-FOCuS ATU-R label DTAG-version (DE) CAT. NO: Y41568 2001 0014050199//NTKKAK 40 192 894-091 DT A0AA ECI Telecom Hi-FOCuS ATU-R label FT-version (FR) showing ECI Telecom-logo on the left and the follwing text: CAT. NO Y51115 2001 0010717333//3411841578182 ECI Telecom Hi-FOCuS ATU-R label HK-version (HK) showing ECI Telecom-logo on the left and the follwing text: HI-FOCUS ATU-R REV. A1//S.N. 0008358432 092000 CAT. No. Y81500

The number upper right on the DTAG-version is composed of 2-digits 00 and 8-digits S/N that – converted to hex – makes up the units MAC-address using IEEE OUI 00-20-8F of 2 OUI of ECI Telecom. Due to this scheme, the serial is limited to 16.777.21510 = FF-FF-FF16. The above example makes up the address 00-20-8F-C6-5C-03

Strange enough the package-label is mixing up some digits reading 401918284EA or MNr 40 189 186-091, LimNr Y57177 and a S/N 0011737457.

OS

The unit uses WindRiver VxWorks RTOS that has its own newsgroup. You can also find some archived newsgroup-postings by ECI Telecom there, wether related to this unit or not.

initialization

At initialization-phase the unit broadcasts an ARP-packet on the ethernet-interface, asking for duplicate IP. This gives you the IP used by the device. Normally this is 192.168.20.80, but on FT-models where LAN-access is configured to be deactivated it is 0.0.0.0. No other IPs are known to be in use, although one can imagine every IP is possible to be configured. You can capture this event by tcpdump (linux) or Analyzer: A public domain network analyzer. For Windows 95/98/NT platform.. If using the latter you probably want to update your conf/data/tables.dat to include the following lines:

[VENDOR_CODE:3]
00065F ECI Telecom, IL
00208F ECI Telecom, IL (ATU-R)
00901A Unisphere Solutions, US (PPPoE-AC)
00D0BA CISCO Systems, US (PPPoE-AC)

[PROTOCOL_TYPE:2]
8863 PPPoE control packet
8864 PPPoE data packet

remarks

The unit answeres ICMP-echo-packets (ping) by a reply.

The actual PPPoE-traffic will all be using another MAC-address. This is the Access Concentrator sitting in the exchange. In the case of PPPoE-AC-name HNOX12-erx this is 00-90-1A-10-11-B9 indicating Juniper Networks ERX-(700)/705/(1400)/1410/1440 Edge Routers [multi-brand, due to aquirement: Siemens ICN, Unisphere Networks].
